Victorian State Budget 2020/21
November 2020
Key themes for Transport are contained in the Budget Papers under:
Building strong, connected communities
These include:
Suburban Rail Loop ($2.2 billion)
- The Suburban Rail Loop will transform Victoria’s public transport system and connect Melbourne’s middle suburbs, linking every major rail line from the Frankston lineto the Werribee line, via the airport. And with three transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine – regional passengers will also benefit, no longer having to travel through the CBD to get to work, our world‑class hospitals or universities in the suburbs.
Geelong Fast Rail ($ 2 billion)
- Once complete, this project will mean fewer stops, faster trips and less crowded trains. It’ll also reduce reliance on the Princes Freeway corridor. Most importantly, it’ll mean less time commuting – and more time spent with the people you love
Building better rail for regional Victoria ($3.8 billion)
- Building and maintaining the Victorian Regional Rail network
Next Generation Trams ($1.5 billion)
- To purchase 100 Next Generation Trams and commence the establishment of a tram maintenance facility in Melbourne’s north west, keeping our trams up to scratch.
Improving our road network ($450m)
- For a road maintenance blitz, maintaining, repairing and resurfacing roads across metropolitan and regional Victoria
- Metropolitan road and intersection upgrades Metropolitan roads and intersections will be upgraded to improve road safety and travel times. This investment will support economic recovery through a more productive metropolitan road network and through the creation of jobs during construction of these projects.
Car parks for commuters ($234 million)
- Funding is provided to continue the work of the Car Park for Commuters fund to build new and upgraded car parking at metropolitan and regional train stations across the state. The extra parking spaces will relieve pressure along train lines, unclog neighbouring streets and alleviate the need for commuters to drive between stations when looking for parking
