Webinar - Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management
AITPM recently held a webinar focusing on the recent release of the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management. Whilst the webinar was organised by the Victorian Branch it attracted a national interest with the new guidelines set to change the way training, prequalification, and registration is applied across the country.
Dr Dan Sullivan who is the Founding Director of Solutions in Transport was appointed in 2015 by the Austroads Board as Project Manager for the Safety at Road Worksites project. In this role he delivered the new ten-part Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management and projects undertaking research on international best practice in safety at road worksites. Dan provided a detailed overview of the following as part of his presentation on the project:
- The Australian Standard AS 1742.3:2019 has previously been identified to have a number of limitations. As part of the project the document has been updated with the intent that it should be read in conjunction with the Austroads Guide which provides more guidance around the application of the Standard.
- The guide has been separated into 10 parts which reflects the various users of the documents and provides a focus on key topics.
- He noted that there is ongoing work required around national qualifications and there is being additional work undertaken to establish a qualification scheme which also identifies poor performers.
James Ritchie from Department of Transport also provided an overview of the Victorian program for harmonisation. James indicated that Department of Transport are seeking input from the industry, which will commence in the next few weeks, and are aiming to have a revised training and prequalification scheme up and running early 2022.
Given the interest in the topic and the change occurring in the industry AITPM are looking to partner with Austroads to bring an updated national presentation in the new year.
