Aimsun’s Gamified Workshop puts the fun into transport planning
2024 National Transport Conference
September 2024
Aimsun led a very popular Gamified Workshop at the recent AITPM Conference. The workshop was based around a board game concept, developed by Andrew Li of Aimsun, which invited teams of participants to come up with the best transport strategies for the fictional town of Aimsunville. The premise was that the mayor of Aimsunville had suddenly came across extra funds to spend on improving transport along Aimsun Avenue but had to decide how the money would be best spent.
At the Gamified Workshop, different teams of budding transport planners competed to choose the best balance of new policies, focusing on active travel, public transport and accessibility with the specific goal of working toward SHARED transport goals. The challenge was to balance strategies so as not to skew the network too severely in favour of a specific user class.
After a lively session, Aimsun was thrilled to announce that the winning team was The Walk Scorers, who focussed on great accessibility for pedestrians, using free public transport to mitigate the negative effects on general traffic by reducing congestion via mode shift. Their solution was developed into a microsimulation in Aimsun Next transport modelling software, which was recorded and shared as a video.
Honourable 2nd place went to Team CrashTheNetwork, and both teams won a sum of money to donate to the charity of their choice.
The Aimsun Game was developed by Andrew Li and the session was run with support from Aimsun colleagues Dave Keenan, Ian McCarthy, Timothy Lim and Shehani Samaranayake. Thanks once again to AITPM for hosting the workshop - it was a huge success and Aimsun will definitely be doing it again.
