Meet an AITPM Leader | Tim Judd

We talked to Tim Judd, the Vice-President of the AITPM in WA.

I am a chartered professional with 20years experience in transport planning and design, traffic and road safety engineering.  Currently I'm the vice-president for AITPM in WA, a board member for Streets for People, member of the design innovation reference group for CWANZ and sit on the ACRS WA chapter.

What is your current role?

Director of Transport Planning, GTA Consultants (soon to be Stantec)

What first attracted you to get involved in the transport industry?

Working within local government in the UK.  Getting involved with planning and designing for my local community and shire I lived, gave me a sense of achievement.

Could you explain some key opportunities in your career and how they contributed to your development? 

Becoming a senior transport planner and the additional responsibilities this came with was a key moment in my career growth, facing challenges and learning by doing.  As a senior transport planner,  it enabled me to study for my Masters, which in turn was a key achievement that led to me coming to work in Australia.  Joining GTA and having the freedom and backing to develop my interest in street design and research has also been a catalyst for my career.

What has been involvement with AITPM to date?

I have been on the AITPM WA committee since 2012 giving back to the industry assisting with event planning and organising to ensure our members get exposure to latest trends and updates on exciting projects.

What are your aspirations for your contribution to the AITPM?

To remain on the committee and continue giving back to the industry.

What has been a memorable moment in your career?

I have a number of great moments seeing projects I worked with a team to plan and design come to life on the ground.  One recent memorable moment is winning the contribution to urban planning by a non-urban planner award (in conjunction with my colleague Tanya Moran) from the Local Government Planning Association.

Is there a challenge/problem that you have experienced in your career and how did you overcome it? 

I created the main challenge for myself, moving from the UK to Perth with my family, taking on a new managerial role at a consultancy (when I had only ever been at local government previously).

What are your personal and/or professional career plans for the future? 

I don’t have a set career plan for the future, just to keep working on great projects with a fun team so I enjoy coming to work each day.

Do you have any advice you would like to share to professionals in the transport/traffic industry? 

My main advice would be to be open to any opportunity, don’t shy away from something because it seems hard, you learn by doing, you will make mistakes, but you will have a great sense of achievement at the end of it.

What do you do in your spare time to unwind?

I have three kids, two dogs, two rabbits and multiple insects (my daughter brings home as pets) so my spare time is taken up immersing myself in all things family.

Anything else that you’d like to share? 

Just that being a member of AITPM has provided some great training and knowledge (through seminars and technical forums) some of which I still refer back to today for projects – its also a great way to stay in touch with industry and peers.
