Vale Mike Veitch
It was with significant sadness that we share the news of the passing of Veitch Lister Consulting’s founder, Mike Veitch. Mike passed away peacefully on Sunday 23 February 2020 after a severe stroke a few days prior. He was 71 years of age.
Mike has touched the lives of many colleagues within the traffic industry over a lifetime dedicated to improving transport forecasting. Always a man of technical depth, but with a tenacity and a calming demeanour to communicate complex messages.
The 1970’s image of Mike sitting in front of his early model pre-Atari computer will be an enduring memory for many in our profession. AITPM celebrates the life of a man who made a substantial contribution to many.
The AITPM Board and CEO together with the whole AITPM family extend our thoughts to Mike’s three children Tim, Nick, and Katie, and the rest of his family and friends. As announced by the Veitch Lister Consulting team, those who had the opportunity to work with him will also feel a tremendous loss. He was a leader in the transport planning industry who founded a company that still represents the same principles he instilled over almost 35 years ago.
His brilliant mind for transport, commitment to his clients, and passion for nurturing talent made Mike one of a kind. He was a pioneer in the art of travel demand modelling in Australia, developing advanced modelling techniques and algorithms that were adopted by many state jurisdictions in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Mike’s fascination with the industry rubbed off on his two sons. Nick and Tim Veitch have both worked at VLC since beginning their careers, and now hold the positions of Managing Director and Executive Director (Technical) respectively. Mike was deeply proud that his sons shared a passion for the business and would continue his legacy.
To celebrate his life, friends and relatives are invited to a gathering at 4pm (BNE time) on Friday the 6th of March, at Hillstone, St Lucia Golf Links, at Carawa Street, St Lucia. If you wish to attend, please let the family know at mike.veitch.farewell@gmail.com for catering purposes. It is kindly requested that you do not bring flowers. However, in case you wish to mark Mike’s passing, a Memorial fundraiser for the RSPCA (https://lnkd.in/gTXS8K4) has been established, reflecting Mike's deep love of all animals.
