About this event
Join us for an insightful webinar on quantifying decarbonisation in transport planning, presented by Urbis and City Science.
The climate crisis is one of the defining challenges of our time. Transport planning plays a significant role in the pathway towards Net Zero, and a key step towards this is being able to quantify and communicate the carbon emission impacts of transport.
Urbis recently collaborated on a project for the Inner West Council in Sydney with UK-based firm, City Science, to quantify the decarbonisation potential of proposed transport recommendations. City Science utilises their in-house analytical tools to apply an evidence-led, needs-based approach to decarbonisation, and have previously delivered transport decarbonisation pathways for various local authorities across the UK. This project for the Inner West Council sought to explore new ways to undertake transport assessments in Australia, placing greater emphasis on sustainability outcomes.
Our speakers will explore:
- How incorporating carbon emission reduction benefits can gain broad appeal and support for policies.
- Valuable insights from recent project experiences.
- Challenging the way we approach transport assessments as practitioners and how you can contribute towards Net Zero goals.
Join the conversation and help shape a resilient, sustainable transport system for our cities and communities.

Presenters
Tim Sullivan | Director, Transport Advisory | Urbis
Tim Sullivan is a Director in the Transport Advisory team at Urbis, based in Sydney. Originally from the UK but living in Australia since 2011, Tim has firsthand experience of the two countries’ differing approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
For more than 17 years, Tim has been a consistent champion of sustainable and inclusive transport across a range of public and private sector roles. His work experience ranges from policy and program development at Surrey County Council to design of major infrastructure projects as part of multi-disciplinary consultant teams and includes nearly two years in the Regional Planning team at Transport for NSW, based in Wollongong. In recent years Tim has focused on sustainable transport and decarbonisation, becoming a thought leader in this space within NSW and the broader transport planning industry.
In his current role at Urbis, Tim works to embed sustainable transport solutions in all government and developer-led projects. Ideally this means working at the happy intersection of placemaking, transport equity and sustainability. Tim is committed to championing a new type of business as usual for transport professionals and is glad to pursue this ambition with the many likeminded souls at AITPM.
John Parnell | Associate Director, Transport Advisory | Urbis
John is a transport planner and civil engineer, with over 8 years of experience in the transport industry, across private consulting, local government, last-mile urban mobility start-ups and construction contractors. John brings experience from across Australia, the United Kingdom and Sweden and is interested in applying best practice from around the world to Australian contexts.
John is an Associate Director in the Transport Advisory team at Urbis in Sydney, working on a range of strategic transport planning and traffic engineering projects that work towards improving sustainable transport outcomes and contributing to an equitable society. John is particularly interested in moving beyond the established predict and provide paradigms and towards more thoughtful, forward-thinking solutions.
Drew Pearce | Senior Transport Consultant | City Science
Drew is a transport and net zero consultant. With over 6 years of experience in the decarbonisation of the transport sector including in private consulting, academia and climate policy. Drew brings experience and expertise in mapping between transport and climate policy to meet net-zero goals and work towards a sustainable, liveable planet.
