As the COVID19 pandemic unfolded in Australian an in the rest of the world, many transportation professionals were quick to adopt the newest buzzword in the block, “new normal”, when describing what a world post-pandemic would look like. Forecasts of widespread telecommuting, reductions of up to 85% on public transport capacity and sharp growth of active travel are just some of the scenarios touted possible, and even plausible, by many in our industry.

In this webinar, three world-class transportation researchers will present early evidence of the changes we can see from COVID19, the long-term impact of past disruptive events around the world and on the bias.

The Adoption and Travel Impacts of Teleworking: Will it be Different This Time?

From Alvin Toffler’s (1980) “electronic cottage,” to Peter Drucker’s (1993) declaration that commuting to an office was obsolete, through countless disruptions ever since, people have predicted the widespread adoption of working from home, with concomitant benefits to congestion, fuel consumption, and emissions. Yet while telecommuting has seen steady growth in the “information era,” overall levels have remained modest—until recently, when the COVID-19 pandemic has forced its adoption on an unprecedented scale. What will happen when it is safe to go back to the office? Will managers and staff alike embrace the benefits of working from home, or will it be back to business as usual? This webinar offers a snapshot of the present, reviews past research and experience on the adoption and travel-related impacts of telecommuting and reflects on future implications for transportation.

Patricia Mokhtarian is the Susan G. and Christopher D. Pappas Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She joined Georgia Tech in 2013, after 23 years at the University of California, Davis, where she was a CEE Professor, Associate Director for Education of the Institute of Transportation Studies, and Founding Chair of the Transportation Technology and Policy Graduate Group. Prior to that, she spent nine years in regional planning and consulting in Southern California, after completing her PhD at Northwestern University. Dr. Mokhtarian has specialized in the application of rigorous quantitative methods to the study of travel behavior for more than 35 years. A key research interest has been the impact of telecommunications technology on travel behavior, with additional interests in land use and transportation interactions, attitudes toward travel itself, multitasking, travel time budgets, induced demand, and congestion-response behavior. She has authored or co-authored more than 200 refereed journal articles, technical reports, and other publications, including more than 40 peer-reviewed articles relating to telecommuting. She is a recent Past Chair of the International Association for Travel Behavior Research and serves on the editorial boards of nine transportation journals.

Early results of the long term impacts of COVID19 on the travel in Melbourne

Early results of a major study of the long term (post pandemic) impacts of the Covid-19 crises on travel behavior in Melbourne are presented. This includes a review of evidence from previous major travel disruptions events and a discussion of the ‘Monash Framework’ a new way of forecast changes from disruptions considering Macro, Meso and Micro changes created by Covid-19. The presentation outlines findings from the first stages of primary research interviews with Melbourne residents. It then discusses Macro effects on population and employment in the long term.

Dr. Currie is a renowned international Public Transport research leader and policy advisor with over 30 years experience. He has published more research papers in leading international peer research journals in this field than any other researcher in the world. He is founder and Director of the Public Transport Research Group at Monash University which was identified as the 3rd top academic research group in the world in a European independent review of the field in 2015. In 2016 Dr. Currie won both the best paper in the 14th World Conference on Transport Research in Shanghai and the best paper in the 95th Annual Meeting of the Transport Research Board in Washington DC, the largest transport conference in the world. He also won the TRB paper award in 2012 and is the only person to ever win it twice. In 2020 Prof Currie won the Engineers Australia Transport Medal for the impact of his research. Dr Currie is a board member of the Singapore Land Transport Authority Research Advisory panel and the International Advisory Board of K2, The Swedish Knowledge Centre of Public Transport. He is currently leading a major research program exploring the long term impacts of Covid-19 on travel which is the subject of his address.

Who’s version of the future? Travel predictions under COVID-19

As COVID-19 changes the way we live, work and learn at a speed and scale unprecedented in living memory, it is no surprise that researchers, planners and professionals are wondering what COVID-19 means for the long-term future of our transport systems. As we gaze into our crystal balls, we must remember that our predictions often reflect our own personal experience. We must recognize these reflections if we are going to embrace the hard work it will take to change the future of our transport system.

Dr. Alexa Delbosc is a Senior Lecturer at the Monash Institute of Transport Studies in the Department of Civil Engineering. She is an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher conducting a study of the changing travel behaviour of Australian millennials. She draws from her Master’s in social psychology from Harvard University and PhD in Transport from Monash University to study the intersection between the transport system, individual travel and societal quality of life. She teaches Traffic Engineering and Management at Monash University with an emphasis on managing the system for the needs of all road users.
