The AITPM has been coordinating a range of discussions with our members regarding the impacts, opportunities and wider considerations regarding COVID-19. This Transport Modelling Network session focusses on the mobility data sources being reported online and in the media, and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of each. We will also hear from the Victorian Department of Transport on the importance of fusing data sources and how COVID-19 is driving demand for timely data delivery.
Presenters:
- Ali Inayathusein, National Director – Future Transport, VLC
- Tim Spalding, Senior Insights Analyst, Victoria Department of Transport
- John Reid, Managing Director, Austraffic
- Chaired by John Richardson, Victorian TMN representative and Principal Transport Modeller, Jacobs
Ali (VLC) will present a balanced view on datasets being used to describe travel patterns during COVID-19, compare the strengths and weaknesses of various datasets such as:
- mobile phone app data (location based services)
- sensor data sources
- mobile phone data (telco) and,
- traditional surveys
This will be supported by case studies showing COVID-19 analysis from various sources.
Tim (DOT) will follow this with a presentation on:
- The importance of data fusion and the data modelling that goes in to reporting public transport patronage, and how it is constantly evolving
- How COVID-19 is driving demand for timely data delivery
John (Austraffic) will conclude with an emphasis on why poor or even bad data is counter-productive. Even if results fit our preconceived ideas that doesn’t mean it is accurate, that good data expands our perceptions and thinking and can be surprising in its results.
Q&A will follow the presentations.
