About this event
The Safe System approach adopts a holistic view of the road transport system and the interactions between people, vehicles, and the road environment. It recognises that people will always make mistakes and may have road crashes – but those crashes should not result in death or serious injury.
Safe System Solutions require a comprehensive understanding of road users, which may not be possible to achieve through traditional road safety assessment techniques. The presentation explained the safe system approach, what it looks like in the real world and offers what solutions may look like. In this regard, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based video analytics, together with traffic conflict techniques, offer a viable alternative to develop targeted road safety countermeasures and evaluate them. However, without considering the theoretical foundation of traffic conflicts and crashes, the estimation of crash risks might be misleading.
This webinar has been developed by the Safety Task Group set up under the AITPM Inclusive Mobility Program. The Safe System approach has been an area of focus for this group as it seeks to increase discussion on the challenges and opportunities to create positive action in our transport community.
Speakers
Professor Shimul Haque | Director | Smart Transport Safety Research Lab | QUT
Prof Shimul Haque is a Professor of Transport Engineering, Head of School (Acting), Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Director of the Smart Transport Safety Research Lab (STSR-Lab) at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia.
He is a specialist in econometrics and artificial intelligence applications in transport engineering and traffic safety. His research is focused on developing intelligent technologies to save lives and reduce road traffic injuries.
He has established a strong track record of improving the theoretical understanding of road safety dynamics at transport facilities and developing efficient and low-cost countermeasures for road traffic infrastructure. Prof Haque has delivered more than 20 road safety projects in Australia and has published more than 150 peer-reviewed research articles in top-class journals and international conferences. He co-founded the university-led start-up Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG), which provides a world-leading platform in transport analytics by applying artificial intelligence and machine learning that support decision-making for transportation network safety, real-time operations, asset management, and network modelling functions.
Dr Jason Deller | Transport Engineer | Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG)
Jason is a highly seasoned professional with over 30 years of expertise in the realm of road safety, transport planning, and traffic engineering. With a robust background in government roles, Jason brings extensive experience in project management, policy planning, and strategic transport planning to the table. Specialising in road safety audits and safe system assessments, he has demonstrated a keen understanding of the intricacies involved in ensuring safe and efficient transportation systems. His expertise goes beyond traditional road audits, incorporating a holistic approach to road safety that aligns with the principles of the Safe System framework.
.Through a meticulous approach, he has successfully contributed to optimising infrastructure, enhancing overall safety, and improving traffic flow. Having navigated various government environments, Jason is well-versed in the nuances of policy planning, bringing a strategic perspective to transportation initiatives. His wealth of experience in project management ensures the successful execution of complex endeavors, from conception to completion. Known for his ability to balance the practicalities of engineering with the broader goals of strategic transport planning, Jason is a key player in creating sustainable and effective solutions for the evolving challenges of modern transportation.
