About this event
The AITPM Transport Modelling Network (TMN) and the NZ Modelling User Group (NZMUGs) are excited to welcome you to this joint event. This is a great chance to hear presentations across a range of topics and connect with industry colleagues across Australia and New Zealand.
We are excited to showcase the following speakers from the 2023 AITPM National Conference and 2023 NZMUGs Conference to share their content internationally:
- Tim Sullivan | Decarbonising Transport – Lessons from the UK
- Geoffrey Cornelis | Exploratory Modelling Analysis
- Jade Mackay | A Wholistic Approach to Representation through Population Synthesis – Project Monty Intro
- Robert Kinghorn | Economic Appraisal using Agent Based Models: Opportunities and Challenges
Join us for an engaging session on Thursday 7 December from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM AEDT.
Please note that space is limited, so be sure to secure your spot by registering before the deadline on Wednesday 6 December 2023 at 6:00 PM AEST.
For any inquiries or further information, feel free to reach out to Mariya Maslova
The AITPM Transport Modelling Network (TMN)
The AITPM Transport Modelling Network (TMN) is a national committee which is composed of elected representatives from every state and territory in Australia. The TMN is dedicated to cultivating and catering for the interest knowledge and expertise of Transport and Land Use Modelling (TLUM) across Australia. The TMN covers a broad range of Transport and Land Use Modelling activities for all modes of transport. This provides an opportunity for individuals from all sectors, including government, academia, research, data collection, software development and consulting to interact, share knowledge and promote good practice within the modelling community and to/from the wider transportation planning & engineering industry. For the AITPM National Conference, the TMN assists with the development of the transport and land use modelling stream by reviewing all abstract and paper reviews, and shortlisting a selection of keynote speaker options in collaboration with the local conference organising committee.
The NZ Modelling User Group (NZMUGS)
The NZ Modelling User Group (NZMUGS) is a sub-group of the Transportation Group, dedicated to promote the interests of transport modelling within NZ. It is the intention that NZMUGS will represent all aspects of modelling including static/ deterministic, micro-simulation, wide-area/ strategic modelling, passenger transport modelling, as well as emerging areas as pedestrian and accessibility modelling. The NZMUGS Conference provides a significant opportunity for researchers, engineers, modellers and other practitioners in the transportation modelling fraternity to discuss current developments with macroscopic, static/ deterministic, micro-simulation, wide-area/ strategic modelling, passenger transport modelling as well as emerging areas such as pedestrian and accessibility modelling.

Tim Sullivan | Principal Transport Planner - Net Zero | WSP
Tim has been a consistent champion of sustainable and inclusive transport across a range of public and private sector roles for nearly 17 years. Originally from the UK but living in Australia since 2011, Tim has firsthand experience of the two countries’ differing approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
His work experience ranges from policy and program development at Surrey County Council to major infrastructure projects and includes a recent two-year stint in State Government. In his current role at WSP, Tim’s focus is embedding net zero thinking into all transport planning and design projects and developing innovative tools and methodologies to help clients with the sometimes daunting decarbonisation challenge.
Geoffrey Cornelis | Principal Transport Modeller | Jacobs
Geoffrey is a Transport Modeller with over 17 years of experience in transport planning and modelling, based in Jacobs' Christchurch office. He has worked for both consultancies and public authorities, on a wide range of projects throughout New Zealand, Australia, UK and Ireland.
He is particularly interested in the development of strategic, multimodal transport demand forecasting tools and how they can best be applied to support decision-makers in dealing with complex transport issues. He has used models and transport data analytics on a wide range of projects including regional long term planning, multimodal studies and business cases.
Jade Mackay | Principal Data Scientist | Ministry of Transport (New Zealand)
Jade Mackay began his career modelling materials physics problems using classical and quantum mechanical methods. He developed his craft during a long stint doing large scale automated statistical weather forecasting. Finally, he has arrived at the ultimate modelling challenge: the movement of humans.
Robert Kinghorn | Director of Planning & Infrastructure Economics | KPMG
Rob has more than 20 years’ experience in transport project and policy appraisal, specialising in demand forecasting, economic cost-benefit analysis, options assessment and business case preparation.
He has worked with public and private sector clients in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the US providing the evidence base to justify major rail, road, freight and public transport projects. He has advised on some of Australia’s largest infrastructure investments including Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project.
In a world of increasing availability of data and ever more sophisticated models, he is passionate about ensuring that we use these to inform better investment decision-making. In this presentation, he explores the opportunities and challenges of using the outputs of this new generation of activity-based models to improve the strategic narrative and ‘storytelling’ within options assessment and business cases.
