About this event
As the population ages and people live longer there is a public health necessity to ensure older people have a safe environment to stay active through the use of active transport.
As people get older they want to keep their independence which often includes driving as long as possible. However, a portion who do not want to or, can no longer drive still want to keep their independence while not being car dependent.
To ensure older people can stay independent and mobile our street networks need to be designed to accommodate a safe network of connected streets taking older people door to door.
Speakers include:
- Tim Judd, Senior Principal, Stantec
- Honorary Professor Laurie Buys, PHD - Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences
- John Mayo, Chief Advisor- Government, Spinal Life Australia and Deputy Chair—Queensland Accessible Transport Advisory Council
- Dr Jane Bringolf, Chair, Centre for Universal Design Australia
For any enquires, please contact Tim Judd
Honorary Professor Laurie Buys | University of Queensland
Laurie Buys, PhD is Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology and University of Queensland. Her research directly explores the understanding of, and accountability for, the real effects felt by older people resulting from changes in their physical, economic and social life. She has established strong collaborative partnerships with a wide variety of community, industry and government organisations to investigate the dynamics and impacts of ageing within our communities, centred around the belief that prevention rather that mitigation of impacts can be achieved through a multidisciplinary approach and the development of appropriate strategies. The majority of her research involves projects that examine issues such as quality of life, engagement and well-being.
John Mayo | Spinal Life Australia and Deputy Chair—Queensland Accessible Transport Advisory Council
John Mayo is Chief Advisor – Government at Spinal Life Australia and has extensive experience as an access and inclusion advocate for cohorts with diminished functionality. He is an advisor on customer access to transport, buildings, goods, services and information - all aimed at maximising the social and economic performance of services and venues. A member of the National Accessible Transport Taskforce modernising Australia’s public transport legislation and a recipient of the United Nations international Year of the Built Environment Award (Accessibility).
Dr Jane Bringolf | Centre for Universal Design Australia
Jane Bringolf is a founding director of Centre for Universal Design Australia, a registered charity. She wants to see a world where designers and policy makers automatically consider the diversity of the population and create inclusive built environments, products, services and ICT. As Liveable Communities Project Manager with Council on the Ageing (COTA NSW), Jane worked with 23 local councils in NSW to create age-friendly communities. She also writes regularly on universal design and inclusive practice and participates in conferences and fora. She has contributed to several advisory panels and working parties promoting inclusive thinking and universal design. Jane’s academic qualifications include a BSSc, MBA and PhD, and Churchill Fellow.
