Join the AITPM WA Branch for this (In-person technical event) to hear from presenters on two new approaches/programs in Western Australia to improve the liveability and safety of our neighbourhoods.
The session agenda is outlined below:
12.00-12.30pm – Networking and light refreshments
12.30-1.00pm – Reconnect WA (James Brooks, Manager Transport Planning at RAC)
In 2020 RAC began partnering with local governments from across WA as part of the Reconnect WA initiative. Reconnect WA seeks to help reimagine and revitalise streets and public spaces to create vibrant and active places for Western Australians to interact and connect with each other. Through the Reconnect WA initiative RAC aims to inspire and empower residents and business communities to co-design and drive change in their local area. This presentation will explore how RAC is working with local governments to deliver quick, lower-cost and innovative improvements to test new ideas with communities, and highlight the impact these initiatives had in creating more people friendly streets and inviting public spaces.
1.00-1.20pm – A tool for healthy streets in WA - Part One (Tim Judd, Director, Transport at GTA now Stantec)
Tim Judd will present on what the how the Healthy Streets tool came about in London and the journey to bring it to Australia.
Healthy Streets is a human-centred framework for embedding public health in transport, public realm and planning. There are 10 Healthy Streets Indicators, which focus on the human experience needed on all streets, everywhere, for everyone.
1.20-1.40pm – A tool for healthy streets in WA - Part Two (Shannon Leigh, Senior Transport Planner at Cardno)
Shannon Leigh will present on the tool itself, how it works and why we should be using it in WA.

Presenters:
James Brooks | Manager, Transport Planning at RAC
James is Manager, Transport Planning within the Social and Community Impact division of RAC in WA. James has more than ten years of experience working in transport planning and policy across Australia in both the public and private sectors as well as for a membership organisation. In his role in RAC’s Social Impact team, James represents RAC members and community interests in relation to transport and urban planning, social connectivity and affordability issues.
Tim Judd | Director, Transport at GTA now Stantec
Tim has 20 years’ experience in the area of Transportation and Land Use Planning, Road Safety, Public Transport and Active Travel. Tim is an IPWEA/Main Roads WA accredited Senior Road Safety Auditor and has particular expertise in the planning and design for Active Transport, with an emphasis on promoting safe travel. Tim has vast experience with cycle and pedestrian route and corridor analysis as well as street design. Tim sits on the IPWEA Road Safety Committee, AITPM WA committee, Local Government Planning Association Committee, Cycle Walking Australia New Zealand Design Innovations Panel, a board member on the advocacy group Streets for People and is one of only a few accredited Healthy Streets Assessors in WA.
Shannon Leigh | Senior Transport Planner at Cardno
Shannon is a senior urban/transport planning professional with 16 years' experience in Perth, who is passionate about people focused places and positive engagement with people and organisations. Over the course of her career, Shannon has gained significant experience in transport planning in State Government as well as implementation work at Curtin University, when she was awarded Workplace Champion from the Department of Transport for her program of works for Curtin University. A lifechanging Bikeable Cities Masterclass in Copenhagen stoked interest in active transport and healthy design, which led her to found the non-profit Streets for People in 2018, a Perth advocacy group. Shannon is now the Director of Streets for People, a member of Cycle Walking Australia New Zealand (CWANZ) and a member of the Transport, Safety & Advocacy Advisory Group for WestCycle. Shannon is one of only a few accredited assessors for Healthy Streets in WA.
