In 2019-2020, Cred Consulting were engaged by the City of Sydney and the global organisation, C40 Women4Climate Initiative to undertake research on active transport across Sydney with a gender lens. This study looked at how women travel around Greater Sydney and whether they walk and/or cycle as part of their everyday journeys. It explores the key drivers, enabling factors and level of use of active transport by women for complex trips (those that involve trip chaining and/ or transporting a dependent person on a single journey). Grounded in the power of women to make change, it was important to apply feminist research approaches that acknowledge and value the importance of experience and storytelling. Collecting data that is gender-responsive is an important step towards creating more universally accessible cities (including active transport infrastructure) that are not only women friendly but also inclusive of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
The study included quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect data on how and why women travel around Greater Sydney. Quantitative research included a survey about a complex trip women undertake on a regular basis. The survey was distributed both online and in person across different urban contexts in Greater Sydney and attracted 889 responses. Qualitative research included 18 ‘go-along’ interviews with diverse women across Greater Sydney. Following these stages, a stakeholder workshop was held with transport, health and planning professionals and advocates to develop and workshop recommendations that could help make active transport more inclusive for women. This study seeks to better understand women’s mobility to support planning outcomes that consider women’s unique needs. This approach may also empower and enable women to make greener transport choices when moving around Greater Sydney, helping to alleviate the climate impacts of fossil fuel modes of transport.
Join us for a conversation with lead author, April McCabe (Cred Consulting) to discuss the recommendations of the research, heard some stories from the 'go along' research experience and how we all can walk (or ride) in her shoes and apply a gender lens to decisions we make as city shapers.

April McCabe | Cred Consulting | Associate Director, Strategy + Planning
April is an experienced urban planner and policy specialist with 20 years experience in government and the private sector in Australia, UK and Ireland across metropolitan and regional areas. Prior to joining Cred Consulting, April was the Principal Policy Advisor to the Lord Mayor of Sydney, leading a team responsible for a varied portfolio that spanned the City of Sydney’s policy and service areas.
April is a strong advocate for creating human-centric cities, where the built environment positively influences how we experience and connect within places and the life between buildings and in public spaces drives policy outcomes.
April is also passionate about local activism, gender equality and the advancement of women in the built environment. A driving motivation was that despite there being an abundance of amazing women, we are still largely underrepresented; as leaders, as innovators, as voices and as role models in our cities.
April is the co-chair of the PIA NSW Women in Planning Network and founder of Urbanistas Sydney, a women- led global network creating a space to amplify the voice of women through the sharing of stories, ideas and experiences to create more inclusive, generous and interesting cities
“The challenges facing our world and communities are complex and I believe that urban planners play a significant role in responding to these complex issues. By nurturing the changing interrelationships between places and people, we can build places that project a spirit of generosity and reflect the kind of community we want to be”.
