About this event
AITPM QLD Branch in collaboration with Zwart Transport Planning are proud to host the fourth in-person event at Toowoomba.
Join us to hear from Dr Rodney Tolley, Honorary Research Fellow, Staffordshire University and Director of Rodney Tolley Walks and Jerryn Zwart, Director of Zwart Transport Planning.
#1. Fast Cities: The Elephants in the Green Transition Room – Dr Rodney Tolley (International Speaker)
Presenter: Dr Rodney Tolley, Honorary Research Fellow, Staffordshire University
Dr Tolley will contend that sustained reductions in urban transport greenhouse gas emissions can only be fully achieved when all the damaging impacts of speed are recognised, and city transport is slowed. He will outline synergistic strategies for reducing the speed of existing motorised traffic and encouraging a switch to the ‘active’ modes, set in a context of ‘slow design’ principles for the city. Importantly for public acceptance and buy-in, speed reductions also produce valuable co-benefits for quality of life, illustrating how a green transition through ‘slowing’ the city can be a practical and popular route to a safer climate future.
#2. More Walking: Planning, Implementation and Micro-mobility
Presenter: Jerryn Zwart, Director of Zwart Transport Planning
Jerryn will provide an update on Toowoomba Regional Council’s Walking Network Plans in Oakey, Highfields and Toowoomba CBD, including results of the community engagement. She will also share her recent learnings from her American study trip on micro-mobility in regional areas – the role it plays in the overall transport system, lessons learnt and how we can balance the safety and comfort of people walking with this ever-growing mode of transport.

With Paul Tranter of UNSW Canberra he published “Slow cities: Conquering our addiction for health and sustainability” (https://www.elsevier.com/books/slow-cities/tranter/978-0-12-815316-1), in June 2020. His next book, this time with Paul Tranter, Professor Matthew Burke (Cities Research Institute, Griffith University, Brisbane) and Carlos Pardo (NUMO - New Urban Mobility Alliance, in Washington DC) is Foot off the Gas: How Big Speed is accelerating the climate crisis – and what we can do about it (Bibliotopia, in press).
