About this event
Transport models play a crucial role in economic appraisal and infrastructure planning, but their application varies across different contexts. In the U.S., Activity-Based Models (ABMs) are widely used, influencing how transport models support decision-making. This exclusive in-person event brings together leading experts to explore these differences and share valuable insights from real-world applications.
We’ll kick off with Renan Grace, who will provide an overview of how ABMs can be used for economic appraisal. Following this, Joe Castiglione (San Francisco County Transportation Authority) will share firsthand experiences and case studies on how transport models are applied in San Francisco to support infrastructure planning. Paris Brunton (Department of Transport and Planning) will then present the latest updates on modelling developments in Victoria.
The presentations will be followed by a facilitated Q&A session, offering a chance to dive deeper into the practical applications and challenges of transport modelling. Finally, stay for networking over drinks and nibbles, where you can connect with industry professionals, exchange ideas, and expand your professional network.
Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights, engage in meaningful discussions, and connect with peers in the field of transport modelling!
Registrations close Friday 7 March 2025.

Joe has led activity-based model applications for a wide range of transit, active transportation, and roadway infrastructure investments, long-range plan development, and social equity analyses. Joe also leads the Transportation Authority's data collection and research efforts and led the development of the Transportation Research Board’s Activity-Based Travel Demand Models: A Primer. Joe will describe the SFCTA’s experience with implementing and applying activity-based models to support long-range plan development, scenario assessment, transit and roadway infrastructure investment, and to advance equity analyses.
