The NSW / ACT AITPM Branch Committee invites you join us in this national webinar to hear from Dr Elliot Fishman and Liam Davies from the Institute for Sensible Transport who will present their recently published Policy Document on how Australians can stay safe and minimise their infection risk as restrictions begin to ease in the major cities in Australia.
In our largest cities, public transport plays the vital role of bringing hundreds of thousands of people into our CBDs. On a typical weekday, 60-80% of CBD workers arrive by public transport, mostly on crowded trains.
Australia’s Chief Medical Officer and his state-based colleagues have made it clear that one person per 4m2 is the desired density of people to reduce the chance of infection. Public transport, especially at peak hour has densities exceeding this limit by a factor of 8.
Cities around the globe are facing this challenge as they exit lockdowns. As Australia eases restrictions, it too will face challenges of keeping public transport safe as millions of commuters get back to work.
We have undertaken high level modelling based on Census data to understand the scale of change required in major Australian cities. We explore what measures could be taken to minimise infection risks for those who rely on public transport, as restrictions in Australia are eased.
Dr Elliot Fishman, Director of the Institute for Sensible Transport - Dr Fishman is a leading thinker on integrated transport and sustainable mobility planning, having provided advice to the Prime Minister’s Office, Transport for London and the NYC Department of Transportation. In recent years he has prepared ambitious, best practice transport strategies for local governments in Victoria and NSW. These have included land use and transport planning elements that have sought to maximise the beneficial components of emerging transport technology, such as MaaS possibilities and the shift from short car trips to active transport. Dr Fishman’s innovative work on the possible impacts of driverless vehicles has led governments to rethinking how best to capitalise on the emergence of these technologies.
Liam Davies, Senior Transport Analyst – Liam has worked for the Institute for Sensible Transport since late 2015. He has an urban planning background, which helps provide a broad understanding of transport research and strategic principles, emerging issues and best practice transport innovation. Liam uses GIS and data analytical skills to help understand current transport problems and envision a path towards a more sustainable, less car dependent future. He has a deep understanding of all modes of public transport, including their operational and infrastructure requirements. This is always an asset in projects which involve a public transport.
