From the President - July 2019
National Conference
There are so many reasons to come to the AITPM National Conference being held in Adelaide from 30 July - 2 August 2019.
You will hear enlightened presentations about specific traffic and transport subjects which can be considered a Continuous Professional Development opportunity.
But also, with three great Key Note Speakers, you will get some international experiences and conceptual ideas. I see a strong theme in these speakers of not only developing new ideas and technologies but also taking them through to practical application. It’s worth highlighting again these three internationally respected professionals:
1. Dr JD (‘Doug’) Hunt is Professor of Transportation Engineering and Planning in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary in Canada. His work focuses on researching and developing new and improved models and techniques and seeing them through to application in practical contexts where they can contribute to better planning and engineering.
2. Phil Jones from the UK specialised in the production of design guidance documents. We really do need to have clear manuals and information to embrace new directions.
3. Professor Graham Currie from Monash University who, among other things, is Chair of the Light Rail Transit Committee at US Transportation Research Board and a Board member of the Singapore Land Transport Authority Research Advisory Board. Our interview with Prof Currie, which is covered in this newsletter, shows his dynamic style and that he is not afraid to call it as he sees it.
New Membership structure
In May, AITPM proudly launched a new structure for Individual Memberships that creates a clear pathway for those who are starting out into the traffic and transport industry. The new structure aligns to AITPM’s strategic vision of Industry Sustainability and provides a tiered membership that steps members up from student membership through three levels of Associate Membership then into Membership. Each tier is based on the amount of industry experience the member has gained with the aim to decrease the financial barrier for young professionals.
This is a fantastic initiative that I am proud to support and promote. For further membership details and eligibility please visit the AITPM website: https://www.aitpm.com.au/individual-memberships
