About this event
The AITPM is an association of people practicing in these fields, and the 2024 Transport Practice Workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for AITPM members, traffic engineers, transport and land use planners and elected representatives to:
• Increase their knowledge;
• Exchange ideas and research;
• Develop professional networks;
• Enhance their skills in traffic engineering and transport planning; and
• Keep up to date with the latest techniques and guidelines.
At the workshop you will learn about new perspectives on road safety, traffic signals design, sustainable transport, active transport, public transport and transport modelling. There will also be a thought-provoking panel discussion on topics significant to traffic and transport practitioners
Lunch and tea breaks will be provided.

Ed Steane | Director, Urban Policy | Transport for NSW
Ed is Director of Urban Policy at Transport for NSW, where he leads a team with policy responsibility for walking, cycling, and place-making. The Urban Policy Team work across a range of projects relevant to local government, including Community Improvement Districts, Local Traffic Committee reform, and e-Micromobility policy. Ed has a background in urban planning and environmental law and is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Urbanism at the University of Sydney’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning.
Brooke Wharton | A/Executive Director, Cities Revitalisation and Place, Cities and Active Transport | Transport for NSW
Brooke Wharton is an urban and regional planner with a genuine passion for urban design and placemaking. Brooke’s experience spans urban renewal, place revitalisation and management, and major infrastructure provision. At Transport for NSW, she leads a multi-disciplinary team delivering state-wide programs aimed at helping enhance the walking and cycling experience for communities in neighbourhoods, local centres and transport hub precincts state-wide. This includes the Safer Cities Program, Streets as Shared Spaces, Business Improvement Districts Pilot, Places to Love, NSW Public Spaces Charter, Great Places Toolkit, The Festival of Place and more.
Richard Shepherd, Director Transport Planning| Transport for NSW
(Dr.) Richard Shepherd, Director Transport Planning, leads and contributes to resolution of significant transport and integration issues across all four major projects at Sydney Metro. He is passionate about active and public transport advocacy in decision-making, and supporting sustainable mode choices and their role in creating great urban outcomes. Richard holds degrees in urban planning and economic development from UNSW and TU Darmstadt (Germany). He also lectured on transport planning at UNSW during his PhD studies. Prior to joining Sydney Metro, Richard worked at Transport for NSW and RailCorp.
David Ballm | Director Network Operations | Transport for NSW
David has worked in road safety and operations for approximately 20 years starting off in London before arriving in Sydney approximately 10 years ago. I have a major interest in improving road safety wherever possible and ensuring equitable access is provided for all user groups across the road network. As part of my current role, I am responsible for the operation of approximately 4,600 traffic signals across NSW.
Marty Prowse | Director | Matrix Traffic and Transport Data
Martin Prowse is a highly skilled and experienced business owner and manager who currently serves as CEO of the team at Matrix Traffic and Transport Data. With more than 34 years of experience in the traffic and transport industry. Martin started counting cars as his part time university job while studying for his Bachelor of Town Planning. Since then Martin has honed his expertise in traffic data collection, analysis, and planning.
Under Martin’s leadership, Matrix has expanded to have offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Auckland NZ, Wellington NZ and the UK. Matrix has operational offices in Hobart, Newcastle, and North Queensland.
Julie Gee | Executive Director Transport Strategy | Transport for NSW
Julie leads the Transport for NSW Transport Strategy team, responsible for setting the long-term vision for an integrated, multimodal, customer-centric transport system. Her team deliver better community outcomes through collaboratively creating strategies and tools informed by robust evidence that anticipate future challenges and opportunities. This includes creating guidelines and practical tools to support its implementation (including Movement & Place), and multimodal strategic network planning across NSW. She has 30 years’ experience in planning, policy, advocacy and research roles across state and local government, consultancies, universities and the community sector.
Koosha Dehghan | A/Director Transport Strategy and Guidance | Transport for NSW
Koosha has over 13 years’ experience in transport planning, management and engineering. Koosha started his career at Cardno (now Stantec), with a focus on traffic and transport assessments and transport modelling. In his time at Transport for NSW, Koosha has been responsible for managing the Walking and Cycling Program, delivering key long term transport guidance documents and delivering frameworks that help guide our ways of working. Koosha has a passion for helping the industry make informed decisions through evidence based approaches to drive better outcomes for the community.
Rory Brown | A/ Executive Director Smart Places | Transport for NSW
Rory is the Acting Executive Director, Smart Places, in the Active Transport and Vibrancy Branch at Transport for NSW. Rory has led the Smart Places team for the last two and half years and has been part of NSW’s Smart Places award-winning journey since the inception in 2019. In this role he drives an agenda to deliver great place and public space outcomes for people using connected technologies and data solutions.
Graham McCabe | Principal Director | STEP Advisory
Graham is a transport planner and traffic engineer with over 25 years’ experience in developing and leading innovative transport planning and traffic engineering projects.
Graham has deep experience and understanding in the interrelationship between
land-use, activity and transport. He has developed innovative designs to enable improved
connectivity at a human and city scale, and specialises in cost effective, holistic transport solutions.
Graham has expertise in transport planning, public transport system design, traffic engineering and modelling, and designing for walking and cycling.
A trusted advisor to government, he has worked closely with senior executives in Australia and the Philippines.
He has previously worked for Urbis, GHD, Transport for NSW, Roads and Maritime Services and City of Sydney.
