Simon Kinnear, Director, Transport Modellers Alliance
Simon Kinnear
Director, Transport Modellers Alliance
As founder and Director of Transport Modellers Alliance, Simon's passion is in communicating the transport network impacts and opportunities that are revealed through the diligent application of operational modelling and analytical techniques to our congested urban areas. With over 25 years' experience as a consultant and 20 years here in Sydney, he is very familiar with the local network issues and opportunities to improve network planning, design and operations. He has been an active member of AITPM over the past decade and is also currently the National Secretary of the TMN committee. His work includes providing advice to TfNSW, Tier 1 Contractors and acting as peer reviewer of operational modelling applications. Recent delivery roles have been as traffic and signals lead for Canberra Light Rail Stage 1, Parramatta Rail Stage 1 and as traffic lead for various motorway design and construction projects in Sydney.
Simon enjoys getting into the detail of systems operation and reflecting ITS realistically in the simulated environment as this enables informed discussion on business case advancement and provides accelerated agreement on assumptions and risk identification. He has successfully applied his expertise to help clients save on wasted effort and program delays through clear articulation of system constraints that avoids entrenched positions emerging and supports collaboration.
Scott Wilkinson, Technical Director Transportation Modelling, Asia Pacific and Middle East, Jacobs
Scott Wilkinson
Technical Director Transportation Modelling, Asia Pacific and Middle East, Jacobs
Scott has over 34 years experience in the development and application of transport demand models in roles from a specialist hands modeller through to a leader of large multi-consultant teams. His experience is mostly in Australia and New Zealand although most recently he has contributed to model development projects in Middle East and UK. He has extensive experience in development and operation of strategic transport models with a continued focus on the integration of big data, spatial coding and presentation methods and integration of innovative software solutions.
Scott's speciality in the toll road traffic patronage PPP space has honed his attention to detail and treatment of risk within forecast modelling. He is a strong advocate of quality in data analysis and transport model application. His passion for accuracy and sensible interpretation of model outputs carries over into his role as Jacobs Technical Director for Transportation Modelling across the Asia Pacific and Middle East region.
Increasingly Scott is becoming involved as a technical advisor and peer reviewer of transport modelling development and application methodologies and projects. With a sound understanding of transport modelling techniques, he provides specialist technical guidance for the review, development, operation and interpretation of traffic and transport models.
Raluca Raicu, Manager Transport Modelling - Transport Analytics, at Department for Infrastructure & Transport, South Australia
Dr Raluca Raicu
Manager Transport Modelling - Transport Analytics, at Department for Infrastructure & Transport, South Australia
Raluca is the Manager of the Transport Insights business of Analytics, at the Department for Infrastructure and Transport in South Australia. Her expertise sits at the intersection of policy analysis, modelling, and innovation.
She has experience in delivering a range of complex and multi-disciplinary projects and publications in the areas of transport systems engineering, urban logistics, road safety, transport planning and decision support in both government and academia.
Raluca currently leads a group of highly skilled and talented professionals in providing the system thinking and evidence base required to support the planning and development of priority transport initiatives from the early stages of planning to strategic business case development. She is committed to progressive thinking in mobility and transport planning, where tools, techniques and processes need to evolve to inform a more robust decision making framework, fitted for uncertainty and societal changes.
Meead Saberi, Associate Professor, University of NSW & Co-founder, footpath.ai
Meead Saberi
Associate Professor, University of NSW & Co-founder, footpath.ai
Dr. Saberi is an Associate Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. He holds a PhD degree in transportation systems analysis and planning from Northwestern University, USA.
His research interests and experience cover a range of transportation areas including traffic flow theory, large-scale transport network modelling, and pedestrian modelling. He has been involved in the development of large-scale mesoscopic traffic models of Chicago and Melbourne. His current research focuses on modelling and optimisation of network-wide effects of autonomous and connected vehicles and active transport.
John Webster Technical Director Transport, Mott MacDonald
John Webster
Technical Director Transport, Mott MacDonald
John Webster BSc, MSc, FAITPM - Based in Sydney, John is a Technical Director within the Mott MacDonald Transport group with over 30 years of experience in transport planning and pedestrian modelling. This experience includes the technical direction of planning pedestrian infrastructure, multimodal corridor and precinct concept design projects and external project design review roles ranging in scope from the London 2012 Olympics to Melbourne & Sydney Metro stations.
In his time john has held both managerial and technical positions and most of his career has been spent in consultancy – the exception being the Pedestrian Planning Manager for SOCOG in the late 90s / 2000.
John currently spends most of his time working on Metro projects under Mott MacDonald’s Engineering Design Assurance technical advisor framework. His role is to lead the provision of pedestrian planning advice for Metro West stations ranging from overseeing the design and construction of extensive microsimulation models to providing design commentary on the public realm.
John’s passion is creating a great experience for people whether it be within a metro station or leaving a sporting event and he will challenge ‘typical’ assumptions and methods to make sure that new approaches are considered at every stage of the design process whilst retaining a critical eye when it comes to fantastic looking model animations which look great but lack substance.
John is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management and lead author of AITPM’s Pedestrian Modelling Guidance published in 2021 and currently in the early stages of planning for the 2nd edition.
Mariya Maslova, Associate Modeller, WSP
Mariya Maslova
Associate Modeller, WSP
Mariya is a transport modeller and data scientist with an academic background in civil engineering, applied maths, and physics, focusing on systems analysis. She brings international expertise, having worked for private and public clients in Australia, USA, and Canada. For over 15 years her focus has been on multi-resolution modelling (macro, meso, hybrid, and micro), survey processing, model estimation, calibration and validation, data analysis, and more recently - QA and model assurance.
Prior to moving to Australia, Mariya worked as a Senior QA Engineer in a team building a customized version of the Aimsun Next platform for a private client in the connected and autonomous vehicle technology field. This experience gave Mariya a unique perspective on various phases of the software development process.
