ABSTRACT
The recently formed National Faster Rail Agency has released the Faster Rail Plan, with an initial focus on passenger trains from Melbourne to Geelong at an average speed of 160 km/hr. Additionally, faster speeds for freight trains have been canvassed to improve the capacity of existing networks and be more competitive with road freight. The practical issues in achieving and maintaining this performance will be discussed, along with the capital and operational cost implications. Early consideration of these issues will avoid sub-standard performance and unexpected rectification costs.
