ABSTRACT
Michael Gillies, Acting Director of Traffic Engineering in the Engineering and Technology Branch of the Department of Transport and Main Roads will be presenting on the following topics:
- The Road Safety Policy and Safety Standards
- The mandatory Safe System Assessment requirement for all TMR projects
- The upcoming safety led project to improve Temporary traffic management through Austroads
- What we are achieving with our Network Safety Plans and Business case lites to improve safety with the Australian Government stimulus packages
- Some of the NACOE and TAP research that we have underway, or recently completed
- Some of the projects that we are working on, such as RIAWS, 0.5m WCLT, SMART crossings

Michael Gillies is currently the Acting Director of Traffic Engineering in the Engineering and Technology Branch of the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Michael joined TMR in 2013 after working for seven years at Cardno where he worked in the traffic engineering and transport modelling space, being involved in a number of significant projects such as the GLNG project, the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade and the Legacy Way Tunnel.
Michael has worked predominately in the road infrastructure and speed areas of road safety, as Manager of Safer Roads in TMR, with some key projects being:
- The Bruce and Warrego Highway Safety Packages where he provided safety engineering to prioritise safety improvements for delivery
- The Australian National Risk Assessment Model which is a key element of the National Road Safety Strategy to improve roads and roadsides
- The road safety component to the revised The Guidelines for Assessment of Road Impacts of Development
- Technical document updating at the State and National levels
