ABSTRACT
The project will be the first rail connection to an ‘Aerotropolis’ in western Sydney, a concept where a city and mixed-use commercial/residential developments, based with an airport, feed off each other and connectivity to the airport. Aerotropolis successes include Amsterdam Zuidas, seven minutes from Schiphol Airport, Songdo International Business District near South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, and the Zhengzhou (China) Airport Economic Zone, which is one of the world’s largest sites for smartphone manufacturing.
Six new stations along 23 kilometres of new rail will be delivered, including two at the new airport and a station in the commercial heart of the Aerotropolis. Construction has started on this city-building project, providing a boost to both the NSW and national economies, supporting more than 14,000 jobs during construction. This project will become the transport spine of the Western Parkland City, linking residential areas with job hubs and the Western Sydney International Airport and Aerotropolis. It will make a significant contribution to 200,000 new jobs for Western Sydney including a high-skill jobs hub across aerospace and defence, manufacturing, healthcare, freight and logistics, agribusiness, education and research industries.
Sydney Metro is employing international best practice world class trains and stations. Employing intuitive technology and design. The project will increase capacity with future demand and be powered by renewable energy and exhibit best practice design to give customers an easy experience even in weather extremes.
Design considers various customer needs for different customer groups including:
- Commuters (work and education)
- Leisure travellers
- Business travellers
- Air travellers.
